We are tribal beings,
we seek a tribal identity one way or another.
Even if we are solitary,
do we still seek to know ourselves in another?
We have an urge to belong,
whether in a human tribe
not just for connection,
but paradoxically to stand apart,
to fence ourselves off and say,
“This is us”, safe against the big, unknowable world.
